Bowdoin’s Smith on list for Major League Lacrosse

The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse included former Bowdoin College All-American Owen “Kit” Smith on its list of 23 players it can protect for the 2012-13 season.

Last season, Smith, who grew up in Brunswick and is the boys’ lacrosse coach at Hebron Academy, scored two goals while playing in seven games for the Cannons.

FIELD HOCKEY: Annabelle Hamilton scored three times to lead Maine (6-4) to a 5-3 win over Quinnipiac (4-4) at Orono.

Zoe Berkey had a goal and an assist and Becca Paradee also scored for the Black Bears, who led 4-1 at halftime.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Dara Spital scored with 1:42 left in the first half to give Brandeis (7-1) a 1-0 win over Bates (1-4) at Lewiston.

The Bobcats nearly tied it with 31 minutes left when Camille Smith’s free kick was bobbled by Brandeis keeper Michelle Savuto.

Anabel Schmelz made eight saves for Bates.

PREPS

BOYS’ SOCCER: Jamal Fraser scored on a penalty kick for Hyde in the 60th minute of a 1-1 tie against Bowdoin’s second team in a game at Brunswick.

Zach Flinkstrom and Andrew Hawkins scored goals eight minutes apart late in the first half and Berwick Academy (2-1-1) held on for a 2-1 victory over the Bancroft School at Worcester, Mass.

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Brooke Downey scored off a corner kick late in the first half and Georgia Barlow converted a penalty kick in the second half to lead Berwick Academy to a 2-0 win over Concord Academy at Berwick.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Erin Phillips scored a season-high 19 points and the visiting Indiana Fever pulled away in the second half and beat the Washington Mystics 66-53.

Jessica Davenport added 14 to help the Fever (21-12) snap a three-game losing streak.

GOLF

LPGA: Defending champion Lexi Thompson shot a 3-under 69 for a one-stroke lead going into the weekend for the Navistar LPGA Classic at Prattville, Ala.

The 17-year-old Thompson had a 12-under 132 total after matching the tournament record Thursday with a career-best 63.

Mindy Kim and Mi Jung Hur were a stroke back after rounds of 65.

TENNIS

MOSELLE OPEN: Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France overcame a slow start to advance to the semifinals, beating American Jesse Levine 6-3, 6-4.

Tsonga will face eighth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia. Davydenko beat Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-0.

ST. PETERSBURG OPEN: Top-seeded Mikhail Youzhny advanced to the semifinals at St. Petersburg, Russia, beating seventh-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain. He will now face Martin Klizan.

Fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy also advanced, defeating Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain.

KOREA OPEN: Caroline Wozniacki reached the semifinals of the Korea Open by defeating Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic .

The Dane will next play Ekaterina Makarova of Russia, who beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain.

GUANGZHOU OPEN: Laura Robson became the first British woman in 22 years to reach a WTA final when she defeated third-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-4, 6-2 at Guangzhou, China.

The 74th-ranked Robson will play Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan in the final Saturday. The last British woman to reach a WTA final was Jo Durie in 1990.

In the first semifinal, Su-wei defeated Urszula Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

MOTOR SPORTS

NASCAR TRUCKS: James Buescher completed a season sweep at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky., using strong restarts to stay in contention before he broke free to win the wreck-filled race. It was the fourth career series victory for Buescher.

Parker Kligerman was second, followed by rookie Ty Dillon, pole-sitter Joey Coulter and Brian Scott.
