School investigating case of girl, 5, left at wrong place

School officials in Gray are investigating after a 5-year-old kindergartner was left alone outside her empty house by a school bus driver.

Katie Capponi said she followed procedure and wrote a letter to her daughter Abigail’s school telling them to drop her off at a day-care center and not at home on Thursday.

Capponi told WMTW-TV she even verbally informed the substitute bus driver on Thursday morning to take the girl to day care.

Capponi said she got a call from the day-care center telling her Abigail was never dropped off.

Capponi’s husband raced home and found the girl crying on the porch. The family estimates she was alone for about 40 minutes.

Superintendent Bruce Beasley said the school is investigating and reviewing procedures.

Governor administers oath to one sitting, 2 new judges

A sitting justice on the Maine Supreme Court and two new judges on the District Court have been sworn into office.

Gov. Paul LePage administered the oath Friday to supreme court Justice Warren Silver, as well as District Court judges Dan Billings and John Lucy. Billings was LePage’s former chief legal counsel.

LePage said he had “utmost confidence that these individuals will serve the people of Maine justly and with integrity.”

The governor previously swore in eight other judicial reappointments. All were confirmed by the Maine Senate earlier this month.

BERWICK

Man dressed as woman robbed bank, police say

Berwick police are looking for a cross-dressing bank robber.

Police are investigating a robbery at the Kennebunk Savings Bank on School Street at noon Friday.

Police described the robber as having long brown hair, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, pinkish colored pants and white sneakers, and carrying a black-and-white-checkered purse. The robber also had white surgical tape on the knuckles of both hands.

Witnesses told police they believed it was a man dressed as a woman.

He was last seen running on Back Street, police said.

Police asked that anyone with information call detective William Russell at 698-1136. Police said there is a reward for helping catch and convict the suspect but they did not disclose how much.

Bow season start for deer, turkey wrong in state book

The opening day of archery season for deer and turkey is incorrect in the state hunting lawbook, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife announced Friday.

The correct date is Sept. 27.

It is correct on the department’s webpage.

Troopers identify two killed in crash of SUV on Route 46

Maine State Police have identified two people killed in a crash in Eddington.

Troopers on Friday identified the driver as 37-year-old Michael Sullivan of Eddington and his passenger as 52-year-old Susan Derrico of Eddington. Police said the car was registered in her name.

Investigators said the sport utility vehicle went off the side of Route 46, striking large tree on Thursday. Both occupants were killed instantly. Troopers said Derrico was wearing a seatbelt but Sullivan was not.

BANGOR

State investigating death of man who died in custody

The Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of a Bangor man with a history of mental illness and drug use after he died at a hospital about a week after police used a stun gun on him.

A spokeswoman for the office said Thursday that an investigation into the death of 28-year-old Philip McCue was launched because he died in custody.

Bangor police did not release details of the incident and said McCue was not charged with a crime.

His parents told the Bangor Daily News their son was involved in an “altercation” with police on Sept. 12 and an officer used a Taser on him.

He was taken to the hospital where he suffered two heart attacks and remained in a coma until his death. An autopsy is scheduled.

PORTLAND

Fire department honoring firefighters and paramedics

The Portland Fire Department will present its annual merit awards on Saturday to honor to firefighters and paramedics for their service.

Several Portland firefighters who provided emergency medical care to victims of a shooting incident on July 11 will be recognized. Other recipients include Zachary Harmon of the Kittery Police Department; and Scott Nollette, a Wells firefighter and Saco dispatcher.

Robert Koerner, CPR instructor, will receive the department’s Good Samaritan Award for providing lifesaving CPR to a cardiac arrest victim at Hadlock Field.

The ceremony is at 10 a.m. at Portland High School Auditorium.

Whiting will be featured in 10-day fish promotion

A fish known as whiting is being featured at Maine restaurants and retailers in an effort to promote lesser-known and under-utilized seafood species.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute’s third Out of the Blue promotional campaign kicked off Friday. During the 10-day promotion, whiting will be the featured product at 21 businesses from Kennebunkport to Bar Harbor.

The program earlier this year featured redfish and mackerel.

The Portland research institute said whiting is a mild whitefish that was historically popular but suffered from overfishing in the 1960s. Whitefish populations are now at healthy levels, but consumer awareness and market prices remain low.
