WESTBROOK – Local residents who might have containers of chemicals in their homes and want to get rid of them will get their chance this Saturday, when the city of Westbrook holds a hazardous materials collection day from 9 a.m. -1 p.m.

“Anything that you don’t know what it is, that you think is hazardous, you can drop it off,” said Public Services Director Tom Eldridge.

Westbrook residents with proof of residency, such as a car registration, driver’s license or tax receipt, can drop off the household waste at the football field parking lot outside Westbrook High School.

Universal waste, such as electronics, can be dropped off at the Public Services facility at 371 Saco St. Disposal is free, but Eldridge stressed it is for Westbrook residents only, and no commercial waste will be accepted.

Universal waste is limited to two items per household, and Eldridge said latex paints will not be accepted.

“They’re not hazardous,” he said. “You can just let those dry up and put them in the regular rubbish.” – Sean Murphy
