GORHAM — Senior Brooke Phinney scored a pair of goals to lead a high-powered Bowdoin College offense to a 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win is the fourth straight for the Polar Bears, who improved to 4- 0 overall. The Polar Bears are ranked fifth nationally in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association (NFHCA) Poll.
Bowdoin took command from the start, scoring in the second minute. First-year Rachel Kennedy slotted home her fourth goal of the season on an assist from junior Katie Riley. Bowdoin tacked on five more goals, including Phinney’s pair, and got single tallies from Cathleen Smith, Pam Herter and Emily Simonton to take a commanding 6- 0 lead at the break.
The Polar Bears scored their seventh goal midway through the second half as freshman Beth Findley notched her first collegiate goal.
Polar Bear senior goalkeeper Kayla Lessard picked up the shutout victory. Despite being seldom challenged in the game, Lessard came up big with a pair of sprawling saves to preserve the shutout.
The Polar Bears travel to Middlebury College on Saturday (noon) for a NESCAC game. Middlebury is ranked third in the latest NFHCA poll.
