PORTLAND (AP) — Energy, the environment and other topics were on the table as the top three candidates for Maine’s open U.S. Senate seat held their first debate together.

Democrat Cynthia Dill, Republican Charlie Summers and independent Angus King squared off Thursday at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.

On a topic that ties energy and the environment together — nuclear waste — Dill and King agreed that disposal of high-level waste remains an unanswered question, while Summers said the potential for nuclear energy should be kept in mind. Summers says a central waste repository makes sense.

Meanwhile, all three candidates are condemning this week’s attack on American officials in Libya and support President Barack Obama’s response.

The three candidates debate next at Lewiston’s Franco-American Center on Monday.
