Four workshops on textile arts will be offered on Friday, Sept. 14, and Saturday, Sept. 15, by the Rufus Porter Museum including The Art of Penny Rugs, Rigid Heddle Weaving, Watercolor Felting and Knitting 101, in conjunction with a talk on textile conservation, Saving Aunt Bea’s Quilt, by Katherine Dirks, emeritus curator at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Dirks’ discussion of the care of textiles both in the home and in a museum setting will take place at the First Congregational Church at 33 S. High St. in Bridgton at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14.

The workshops and speaker comprise the Fall Cultural Heritage Series, and are funded by a grant from the Maine Community Foundation. Each workshop has a small fee to register. Students will learn techniques common in the 18th and 19th centuries and is a unique opportunity to experience past arts forms and new skills.

A free spinning demonstration will be held outside the museum on Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., showing the creation of yarn from start to finish using both a traditional and modern wheel.

The Art of the Gameboard, the special exhibit for summer 2012, features 19th Century decorated gameboards such as Checkers, Parcheesi, Backgammon and Wheels of Fortune. The exhibit can be seen Wednesday-Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
