SACO — Thornton Academy’s Haley DaGraca led the girls soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Kennebunk on Wednesday night at Thornton Academy’s home opener. DaGraca had two assists and a goal for Thornton’s high-powered offense.

The strong Golden Trojans play proved why they are a top contender to win the Western Maine Class A title this season.

“It was our first game at home so we were pumped,” said Thornton Academy coach Chris Kohl.

Kennebunk goal keeper Kyra Schwartzman was busy all night, making 16 saves. Thornton Academy, however, had 19 shots that produced three goals from a relentless attack.

“(Kennebunk’s) goalie made some great saves to keep the game close at the half,” said Kohl.

The first half featured one goal by Courtney O’Brien with 10:33 on the clock. The goal was assisted by DaGraca, who passed the ball into traffic eventually finding O’Brien for the score. Kennebunk failed to get a shot on goal during the first half as Thornton Academy’s offense controlled the ball.

“Last game we were up seven at the half so it’s good to see a little more challenge this time,” said Kohl. “Kennebunk really defended well. We had our opportunities and their keeper had some nice saves.”

The second half featured a goal by Tori Daigle with an assist from DaGraca with 15:32 on the score board. On Thornton’s next possession DaGraca put in a free kick from about 30 yards out that landed in the back right corner of the net.

Considering the amount of shots on goal, Kennebunk kept the game at striking distance for much of the game. It held Thornton’s offense to just three goals, down from the 10 it scored against Bonny Eagle last Friday.

Thornton Academy is now 2-0 on the season and will host Marshwood on Friday. Kennebunk is 0-1-1 with a tie against Marshwood last Friday. It will travel to Sanford on Monday for its next game.
