GORHAM VILLAGE – In a proposal that would replace a vacant gas station, McDonald’s has shown an interest in building a drive-through restaurant at the gateway to Gorham Village.
Gorham Zoning Administrator David Galbraith said this week that he and Gorham Planner Tom Poirier met informally in early August with an engineer from Bohler Engineering of Southborough, Mass., about a proposed McDonald’s at the intersection of Main Street and New Portland Road.
A representative from the engineering firm showed Gorham officials a preliminary sketch plan for a McDonald’s at the site.
“Unfortunately, the plan doesn’t meet the town’s design standards,” Galbraith said Wednesday.
The planners haven’t heard anything further and the town hasn’t received a formal submittal for a project.
Town officials in the past have called the vacant gas station site an eyesore and have hoped for redevelopment of the property.
The two-bay, dilapidated old gas station site at 109 Main St, is owned by AMG Investments, according to Gorham tax records. It appears to have been vacant for several years.
Nearby businesses include a Cumberland Farms store, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Big Apple, Burger King, Subway, Mr. Bagel and Hannaford.
McDonald’s has been looking at the vacant gas station at the intersection of Main Street and New Portland Road for a possible drive-through restaurant.
