The popular Gorham House of Pizza, shut down by a fire in April, could re-open within three months.

The three-story building at 2 State St., owned by Angelo Sotiropoulos, who also owns the restaurant, was swept by fire on April 19.

Jed Taft, project manager for Great Falls Construction in Gorham, said Friday that drivers passing by shout from cars “ Hey, when it is going to reopen?”

“We’re doing everything we can to get him up and going by Dec. 1,” Taft, who lives in Gorham, said Friday.

Sotiropoulos was in the building Tuesday and said the renovation is proceeding “very well.” He’s not set an opening date yet.

“Everything is looking good,” Sotiropoulos said Tuesday,

“Everyone is excited about it,” Taft said about the renovation.

The entire building has been gutted top to bottom. Taft typically has a crew ranging from 12 to 25 workers on the project. The roof, maintaining the same pitch as before the fire, has been totally rebuilt with the addition of six dormers. The renovation will include replacing the three apartments on the upper two floors.

Taft said two of the apartments would have three bedrooms and the other, two bedrooms. The apartments will be town-house style.

The second floor also will have office space for the restaurant and a new laundry area for tenants. The basement gets a cleanup with an access added on the back side.

Besides the fire, caused by a ceiling fan on the second floor, the building received water damage. Taft’s crew has removed about 140 tons of debris and material.

Mold mitigation was the center of attention last week. This week’s focus was installation of new windows and removal of old siding. The building’s new appearance will be gray siding with white trim.

Taft said a sprinkler system would be installed in the entire building. The project includes new wiring, plumbing and a natural gas boiler.

The historic building was built in 1880.

“If the building could smile, it would probably be smiling about now,” Taft said.

Taft is looking forward to dining in the restaurant – he said Hawaiian pizza is his favorite.

Shortly after the fire, Sotiropoulos was diagnosed with cancer. He said Tuesday he’s had a procedure. “I’m OK,” he said. “I’m feeling great.”
