WALDOBORO — A sacred harp singing session is planned for Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m., at St. Paul’s Union Chapel on Dutchneck Road. A potluck supper is also planned, so singers are asked to bring a dish to share.
As always, the group welcomes beginners, curious friends and passing strangers to join in song. The singing is primarily from the “The Sacred Harp,” 1991 Denson edition, a shapenote tunebook that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fuging tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West to the present day. Books will be available to borrow or purchase.
