BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College field hockey team is ranked second in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday.
The Polar Bears are ranked behind defending national champion, The College of New Jersey, and received six first-place votes. NESCAC rival Middlebury is ranked third, while Salisbury and Messiah round out the topfive.
In addition to Bowdoin and Middlebury, three other NESCAC schools appear in the rankings: Amherst (No. 12), Tufts (No. 14) and Trinity (No. 15).
Bowdoin is coming off a phenomenal campaign in 2011 which saw the team roll off 19 consecutive wins before falling in the NCAA semifinals. The Polar Bears won their seventh NESCAC championship and advanced to the Division III “Final Four” for the sixth time in program history.
The Polar Bears will open their 2012 campaign at home on Sept. 8 when they host Wesleyan University at noon.
