Maine Rebels excel in ?all-star game

Alicia Paige of Gorham and Jessikah Lopez of Westbrook, along with the rest of the IWFL Eastern All-Stars, won the 2012 Independent Women’s Football League All-Star game 20-18. Paige and Lopez made the trip to Round Rock, Texas, and represented the Maine Rebels well. Both started as defensive ends for the Eastern Squad and their numbers were called often by the announcer.

The game went down to the wire as the West scored with almost no time on the clock, but their two-point conversion to tie the game was stopped by Paige and teammate Donna Bruce from league rival New England Intensity.

The Maine Rebels are recruiting for the 2013 season. There are several football clinics scheduled from August to November. There is no obligation for attending. No equipment is need for the clinics.

Trek at Shawnee

September always brings the annual Loon Echo Land Trust Trek at Shawnee Peak, and this year you can join a Preview Bicycle Loop to get a feel for the layout and terrain of the race.

On Sunday, Sept. 2 riders will bike the 25-mile course, which leaves at 8 a.m. from Shawnee Peak on Mountain Road and runs along the hills of western Maine. Participants should bring all necessary equipment, spare tire tools and food and water.

The official LELT Trek bicycle race is on Saturday, Sept. 15 and offers three distances, from a 25-miler to the “toughest century in Maine.” This 100-mile ride offers a challenging bike trek from Bridgton to Bethel and through Evans Notch in the White Mountain National Forest. If a walk in the woods is more your thing, you can do a six mile hike “taste trek” across the ridge of Pleasant Mountain with gourmet rest stops along the trail.

Loon Echo Land Trust protects more than 4,000 acres of land in the northern Sebago Lake region, and Executive Director Carrie Walia says she looks forward to the event every year. “It’s wonderful to share such an amazing day outside with so many people who care about land conservation. The Trek funds a significant portion of our annual operating budget, which allows us to steward lands under protection, like Pleasant Mountain, and act on new land projects such the beloved Hacker’s Hill in Casco.”
