SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners activated left-hander Charlie Furbush from the 15-day disabled list and optioned reliever Shawn Kelley to Triple-A Tacoma.
The team announced the moves Friday night before playing the Minnesota Twins.
Furbush, a native of South Portland, had been on the DL since July 18 with a strained left triceps. He was hurt the previous day in Kansas City when he retired the only batter he faced. He is 4-2 with a 2.17 ERA and has been one of Seattle’s most effective relievers this season.
Furbush made five rehab appearances with Tacoma, posting a 6.00 ERA with seven strikeouts.
TIGERS: It was becoming obvious that Victor Martinez would not return this season, but Detroit officially pulled the plug on a comeback for this season.
Manager Jim Leyland and head athletic trainer Kevin Rand, a Cape Elizabeth native, said Martinez, 33, who suffered a torn ligament in his left knee before spring training, won’t play this season.
He will take some time off before beginning his normal offseason routine with a running program coming in November.
He is expected to able to go when spring training begins in 2013.
When he returns, he will have two seasons left on the four-year, $50 million deal he signed in 2011.
WHITE SOX: Chicago activated first baseman Paul Konerko from the seven-day concussion disabled list.
Konerko was the designated hitter and batting cleanup for the series opener against the Kansas City Royals. He has a .315 batting average, 19 homers and 55 RBI in 102 games.
PHILLIES: All-Star catcher Carlos Ruiz expects to return to the team by early September after being sidelined with a left foot injury.
The Phillies put Ruiz on the disabled list two weeks ago because of plantar fasciitis in his foot.
The 33-year-old veteran was having a career year when he was injured, hitting .335 with 14 homers and 58 RBI.
