WESTPORT ISLAND — New digital images of historic town photographs will be presented Saturday at 2 p.m., in the Westport Island Town Hall, Route 144.
A news release describes the exhibit as follows:
Images are quite varied and include family and friends, schoolchildren and old school buildings, lumbering operations at tide-powered sawmills, steamers and their landings, the ferry landing, the “new” bridge (causeway) back in the 1950s, the renovation of the church into the town hall, and many more scenes.
Last year, the Westport Community Association donated about 160 glass lantern slides to the Town History Committee. Since then, the committee received a grant from the Doggett Trust to digitize the images and also acquired acid-free, padded boxes and paper enclosures to safely store the glass slides.
Many of these photographs are identified — who, where, and when — but many are not. The History Committee seeks help in connecting the photos to specific families, homes or locations.
Refreshments will be served.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
