Causeway Update
The heat hasn’t stopped the Causeway from getting its fair share of visitors. People seem to be enjoying the upgrades. It’s nice to see many taking a break from their stroll on the benches and taking in the views. The heat did cause a bit of havoc this past Friday night as the whole causeway blacked out around 9 p.m. My guess is it was the high demand for electricity from the many air conditioners? We were blacked out up at Kimball Corner as well. The good news is it didn’t last long this time, only about 45 minutes I think? The crews are working right through the summer, focusing on the seawalls, retaining walls, placing the last of the boardwalk under the bridge, and removing the old bridge, whose last remnants will be gone this week.
Naples Library
If it is relief from the heat you seek, stop by the Naples Library. Take your kids to the “movies” on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 4 p.m. to see The Lorax. Cool as a cucumber you will be AND complimentary popcorn, what a deal. Sit back and enjoy the show with your little ones and neighbors.
Living Local
There has been a big push on eating and shopping locally in recent years and that is a fantastic thing. But what about recreating locally? Next time you aren’t sure just how you will spend your summer day with the kids, why not head down to the Causeway? It seems many of us just drive by each day and forget to slow down, take it all in, and enjoy what brings the tourists here. Just yesterday my children and I ventured down to TP’s Hotdog Stand where we had the best lemonade and hot dogs, while watching the passengers load and unload onto the Songo River Queen. Before lunch the kids got to spend a substantial amount of time climbing on the “Jungle Jim,” a three-story water float that encourages a great deal of physical exertion! We truly enjoyed our “day trip” and I never heard, “Are we there yet.”
Yard Sale
Yard Sale season is still in full swing, and you won’t want to miss this one. The Edes Falls Sewing Circle’s Yard Sale is Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9-2 p.m. at the Community Hall on Edes Falls Road. In addition to that treasure you might find, you could also indulge in one of the homemade donuts that will be for sale. The group is still accepting donations for the sale. If you have any items, please drop them off at Cheryl Harmon’s House at 6 Edes Falls Road, Naples.
Pig Out in Sebago
This Saturday, Aug. 11, you can literally Pig Out, with reading that is. Farmer Minor and his Pot Belly Pig, Daisy, will visit the library for storytelling and pig petting. This event begins at 7 p.m. and is open to kids from ages 4-12. FMI contact the Spaulding library at 787-2321.
If “pigging out” in the more traditional sense if more your speed, head down to the North Sebago United Methodist Church, Route 114, on Aug. 11 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. There they will be selling those homemade baked goods that only those church ladies know how to make. You know the ones I speak of. Delish. As an added bonus, they are throwing in a yard sale, so you can shop while you munch on goodies. Now that’s my idea of a perfect Saturday morning. Contact the church FMI at 787-3309.
