The Maine girls are turning heads at the eastern regional tournament as they downed a great Connecticut team 4-0 before beating Rhode Island 15-4.

Against, Rhode Island, Maine scored fve runs in the first. Sam Libby, Maddie Elliott, Anna Knapp singled, Taylor Whaley hit a double, and two errors by Rhode Island allowed the runs. Maine added two more in the second when Sandy Ricardi tripled, Libby doubled and Katelyn Tucker singled.

Three batters singled, followed by a double and fielder’s choice. Maine kept the pressure on, pounding out eight more runs in the bottom of the 4th to seal the win.

Defensively, Alex Thompson made an amazing diving catch on a ground ball up the middle, tagged second base to force an out.

Sam Libby was in perfect form on the mound. She pitched the entire game, allowing just five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Against Connecticut, the defense was outstanding for Maine. Sam Libby threw a bullet from center field to home to nail a runner trying to score in the first. Heather Chapman made an amazing running shoestring catch in right and Emily Harlow gunned out a runner trying to steal second. Maine scored a run in the first when Alex Thompson reached on an error, advanced to third and scored on a fielder’s choice.

Maine added three more runs in the fifth. Maria Valente walked, Katelyn Tucker and Sam Libby singled to score one run. Taylor Whaley then crushed a double to center to plate two more runs to finish the scoring.Tucker was phenomenal on the mound. She only allowed four hits and two walks against last year’s regional winner.

Maine defeated Massachusetts in their first game at the eastern regional tournament by a score of 6-1. Maddie Elliott led off the second inning for Maine, ripping a triple to deep left field. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Sandy Ricardi. Heather Chapman drew a walk and Breanna Bozzuto pinch ran for her. Alex Thompson reached on an error to have runners at first and third. Massachusetts ended the threat by gunning out Bozzuto at the plate as she tried to steal home.

Massachusetts led off the third reaching base on an error. After a pop out, the next batter hit a single to have runners on the corners. The girl at third tried to score on a passed ball and was thrown out at the plate. The next batter hit a single to score one run. The next batter hit to Sam Libby in center field, who threw a bullet to third base to end the inning.

Maine broke it open in the bottom half of the third. Libby reached on a fielder’s choice, then four consecutive hits by Taylor Whaley, Abby Ordway, Elliot and Ricardi plated four runs.

Maine added an insurance run in the fourth when Alex Thompson doubled and scored on another hit by Whaley.

Tucker got the save. The game was ended after five innings due to pouring rain.
