OLD ORCHARD BEACH – As much as anything, the American Legion baseball state tournament will test a team’s depth.
Post 51, which won the Class A state tournament this past spring as Messalonskee High, didn’t need to rely on it in the regular season, but now that the team needs it, that depth is there.
The Post 51 offensive leaders, Sam Dexter and Matt Woodbury, combined Friday to go 0 for 7 against Bangor, yet Devin Warren and Jake Dexter combined on a four-hitter, and No. 9 batter Parker Forsley had three RBI as Post 51 stayed in the tournament with a 5-2 victory at The Ballpark.
“Sam and Matt are our studs, hitting-wise,” Post 51 Coach Paul Jacobs said. “They’ve been lax a little bit in the playoffs but hey, that’s why you’ve got other players. It’s one through nine; it’s not one.”
Post 51, with one loss, will play unbeaten First Title at 7 p.m. Saturday.
