OLD ORCHARD BEACH – On Day 1 of the American Legion baseball state tournament, Windham drew motivation from playing a team that featured several key players from Messalonskee’s Class A high school state champions.
On Thursday, revenge played a part in helping Windham stay in the winners’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Westbrook was the victim Thursday, as Shawn Francoeur pitched a five-hitter to lead Windham to a 6-0 victory at The Ballpark.
“Westbrook was the team that knocked us out of the Junior Legion state finals last year,” Windham Coach Nick Dubay said. “It makes it a lot sweeter to win, with games like this, and it makes it a lot easier for the kids to get up for them.”
Windham faces First Title at 7 p.m. Friday, with the winner earning a spot in the championship game. Westbrook has an elimination game at noon against Pastime Club of Lewiston.
Francoeur was effective if not overpowering. He was aided by outstanding defense from third baseman Robbie Hamilton.
“We had our chances early,” Westbrook Coach Greg Souza said. “He kept throwing them (high) and we kept chasing them. It’s the story of our season: If we hit, we’ll win, because we usually pitch well enough.”
After scoring seven runs in the second inning Wednesday, Windham broke through for three runs in the second against Westbrook. Windham added two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The damage could have been worse: Windham left the bases loaded in three straight innings.
Windham’s runs were driven in by six different players. Hamilton singled twice and doubled, while Jack Herzig, Calvin Field, and Nate Boyle added two hits apiece.
“A lot of our kids have a lot of confidence,” Francoeur said. “We play good when we’ve got confidence.”
Westbrook left 11 runners on base. The Zone 4 champs had their best chance in the fifth, with runners on second and third and one out, but the inning ended with a strikeout and a popup.
