OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Pitching on 10 days rest after regular work all spring and summer can be a crapshoot. There’s a good chance it will be beneficial, but also a chance for rust.
But when Harry Ridge took the mound Thursday night for First Title, he knew rust would not be an issue. Ridge went all nine innings and tossed a four-hitter, lifting First Title to a 9-1 victory over Bangor in a winners’-bracket game of the American Legion baseball state tournament at The Ballpark.
“It definitely gave my arm more life,” Ridge said of the extra rest. “It was nice and hot, so I loosened up as the game went on.”
First Title plays Windham, the only other undefeated team in the tournament, at 7 p.m. Friday. Bangor has an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. against Post 51 of Oakland.
It was the second straight four-hitter for First Title. Louie DiStasio beat Pastime Club 9-1 on Wednesday. Ridge, a Cheverus High graduate who plans to play for Bowdoin next spring, struck out eight and walked none, and threw 81 of 116 pitches for strikes.
He got plenty of offensive support, as First Title banged out 16 hits, including four by third baseman Tyler Flaherty. Everyone in the starting lineup hit safely except for Ridge.
Bangor was charged with only two errors but made several misplays.
In the bottom of the second inning, Felix del Vecchio hit a grounder up the middle that two Bangor infielders looked at but didn’t attempt to field. That led to a pair of runs, giving First Title a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, Nic Lops got an RBI triple on a liner that squirted past a charging outfielder. First Title was ahead 5-0 after that inning, and with Ridge in top form on the mound, the game was as good as over.
The game teetered on the farcical in the final innings. Fog rolled in, and First Title picked up four hits in the final two innings on routine fly balls that were lost by outfielders.
“It was tough at the end,” First Title Coach Mac McKew said. “I couldn’t see half those baseballs. I’m glad their guys hit ground balls. That’s about all you’re going to get in this.”
