Celtics add depth with the signings of Collins, Dooling, Smith and Christmas

The Boston Celtics signed free-agent center Jason Collins and re-signed guard Keyon Dooling. The team also announced it had signed two guards who played in Europe last season, Jamar Smith and Dionte Christmas.

Collins, an 11-year veteran, averaged 1.3 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.3 minutes for Atlanta last year. Dooling, a 12-year veteran, averaged 4.0 points in 14.4 minutes last season, his first with Boston. Smith, a member of Boston’s summer league team in Orlando and a former Red Claw, averaged 14.8 points for BK Prostov in the Czech Republic. Christmas averaged 18.6 points and 4.4 rebounds with AGO Rethymno Aegean in Greece.

The Golden State Warriors re-signed restricted free agent forward Brandon Rush to an $8 million, two-year contract. Rush averaged 9.8 points last season.

JUNIOR LEGION: Nick York pitched a no-hitter to lead fifth-seeded Bonny Eagle to a 2-1 win over No. 8 South Portland in a South Division play-in game at Standish.

York struck out eight and walked five. Eric Dennison stole home in the first and C.J. Dunnels scored the winning run on an error in the fourth.

n Eric Strickland hit a three-run double and Caleb Chambers fanned seven in a complete game as sixth-seeded Lyman beat the No. 7 Windham Merchants 10-0 in five innings in the other South play-in.

•  John Parker struck out eight in a complete game and eighth-seeded Brunswick scored three runs in the eighth for a 3-0 win over fifth-seeded OA-Yarmouth in a North Division play-in game at Yarmouth.

NECBL: Joe Torres singled in Kyle Convissar in the bottom of the ninth to give the Laconia Muskrats (17-24) a 3-2 win over the Sanford Mainers (15-26) in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Laconia, N.H. Gavin Stark and Nate LaPointe drove in Sanford’s runs.

FCBL: Chad Funkhouser singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as the visiting Pittsfield Suns (23-21) took a 5-4 win over the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (19-26) in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game.

Tito Lluberes knocked in two runs for the Raging Tide.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Bengals Coach Marvin Lewis received a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season. Lewis is entering his 10th season as head coach, a club record, and has led the Bengals to a 69-74-1 record.

•  The Seahawks signed veteran wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who caught 15 passes for 181 yards in nine games with San Francisco last year.

•  Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley returned to practice following a concussion.

•  Jeff Otah failed his physical again with the Jets, meaning New York’s trade with Carolina is off and the offensive tackle is headed back to the Panthers.

•  The Jets announced they will retire the jerseys of running back Curtis Martin, No. 28, and defensive end Dennis Byrd, No. 90.

•  Giants safety Tyler Sash was suspended four games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

HOCKEY

NHL: Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will return for his 17th season. He had hinted at the end of last season he might retire after registering 27 goals and 32 assists in 75 games.

•  The Buffalo Sabres re-signed gritty forward Patrick Kaleta, a restricted free agent, to a multiyear contract.

FOOTBALL: Junior tight end Justin Perillo and senior offensive lineman Chris Howley of the University of Maine have been named Preseason All-Americans by the College Sporting News. Perillo was named second team and Howley was named third team. The Black Bears are ranked 19th in the CSN Preseason Top-25 poll.

•  Star tailback Silas Redd is leaving Penn State for Southern California in the wake of the NCAA’s sanctions on the Nittany Lions over the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
