The following local students have enrolled at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine beginning in the fall semester: Chelsea Bordeau, of Scarborough, a top 10 student from Mountain Valley High School, will major in biology with a focus on pre-veterinary medicine; William Brooks, from Cape Elizabeth High School, will major in criminal justice; Jacques Comeau, of Scarborough, a student from Saint Dominic Regional High School, will major in human resource management; Matthew DiBiase, from South Portland High School, will major in business administration; Courtney Finley, from Scarborough High School, will major in nursing; Genevieve Foley, of South Portland, a student from St Mary’s Rural High School, will major in biology; Nathaniel Fox, from South Portland High School, will major in finance; Katherine Gadbois, from Scarborough High School, will major in nursing; James-Michael Gilboy, from South Portland High School, will major in communications; Emily Howes, from Scarborough High School, will major in elementary education; Andrea Kinder, from South Portland High School, will major in nursing; Emily Kothman, from Scarborough High School, will major in nursing; Mary Leasure, of South Portland, a student from Catherine McAuley High School, will major in nursing; Matthew Lee, of South Portland, a student from Southern Maine Community College, will major in physical education; Michael McHugh, from South Portland High School, will major in sports management; Sofia Shahid, from South Portland High School, will major in biology with a focus on pre-medicine; and Brendan Horton, from South Portland High School, will major in liberal studies.
Local students honored
The following local residents were among 1,286 students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) named to the university’s dean’s list for academic excellence for the spring 2012 semester: Samuel Eisenberg of Cape Elizabeth, a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering; Leah Greer of South Portland, a junior majoring in computer science; Tyler Reynolds of Scarborough, Maine, is a senior majoring in physics; Tyler Bouchard of Scarborough, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering; Samuel Naseef of Cape Elizabeth, a sophomore majoring in robotics engineering; and Will Lynch of Scarborough, a freshman majoring in actuarial mathematics.
Tufts University recently announced the dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester. Among these students are: Bradley Nakanishi of Scarborough, class of 2013; and Evan Johnston of South Portland, class of 2014.
Bethany Kenyon, of South Portland graduated from Clarion University in May 2012 with a MSLS Library Science.
Local Democrats ?to meet
The Tri-Town Democratic Picnic will be held Thursday, Aug. 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at 39 Victory Ave. in South Portland. (Rain date: Thursday, Aug. 23.) This annual gathering of activists and candidates is sponsored by the Democratic City Committees of South Portland, Scarborough, and Cape Elizabeth.
Among those candidates invited to appear are: Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, U.S. Senate candidate Cynthia Dill, and Maine Senate candidate Rebecca Millett. Other candidates or campaign representatives are expected from the top-of-the-ticket presidential race all the way down to state and local races.
Along with a traditional American barbecue, local Democrats will hear from the various candidates and campaigns about how they can play an important role in party activities between now and November. All registered Democrats and unenrolled voters are welcome to attend.

College plans open house
Saint Joseph’s College of Maine hosts “Summer Day,” an open house for prospective high school students and their families on Friday, Aug. 10, at its lakeside campus in southern Maine.
The day runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and features a campus tour, lunch and information sessions on admissions, financial aid, student life and academics. Saint Joseph’s, a liberal arts college founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1912, offers more than 40 majors and programs at its campus in Standish, Maine. Cape woman named to Ovations board
Louise K. Thomas of Cape Elizabeth has been named to the board of directors of Portland Ovations the 80-plus-year-old not-for-profit performing arts organization in Portland, Maine.
Thomas, a partner at the Portland based law firm of Pierce Atwood, is a longtime supporter of the arts in Maine and has been a patron and member of Portland Ovations for many years.
A graduate of Cornell University and the University of Maine School of Law, where she graduated cum laude, Thomas has more than 30 years experience in all varieties of litigation.
“Louise is passionate about the role arts play in our lives and is committed to making them available and accessible to a wide population. It is clear that her heart and mind are in strong alignment with what Portland Ovations does and the values we hold. Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse open to visitors
The Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is open to visitors every Saturday and Sunday in August 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The lighthouse will also be open on Saturday, Sept. 1, (Labor Day Weekend), Saturday, Sept. 15 for Maine Lighthouse Day, and Saturday, Oct. 6 (Columbus Day Weekend).
The Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is the only caisson-style lighthouse in America accessible by land and open for public tours. Constructed in the late 1800s on a dangerous ledge that is now covered by a breakwater, Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse marks the entrance to picturesque Portland Harbor. Originally illuminated by kerosene, the lighthouse was electrified in 1934 and is now full automated; guiding distant mariners with its characteristic one second flash every six seconds.
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is located off of Fort Road on the campus of Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) in historic South Portland. A tour donation of $5 is requested. Benefit motorcycle rally starts in South Portland
Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts are going to use their horsepower on Sunday, Aug. 19 to benefit children and adults with disabilities.
The 4th Annual Reins of Hope Charity Ride benefits the clients of Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center in Windham. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. at Jimmy The Greeks at the Maine Mall in South Portland. The suggested donation is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger. Riders follow a route traveling to the Riding to the Top farm in Windham for tours and demonstrations. Other stops include the Iron Tails Saloon in Acton and the Maine Street Bar and Grill in Standish. Prizes, silent auction and entertainment will be held following the 4 p.m. finish at the Stockhouse Restaurant in Westbrook.
