BOSTON — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has suspended the pastor of a Boston church charged with having child pornography involving images of preteen girls on a rectory computer.

The Rev. Andrzej Urbaniak, 39, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in South Boston District Court to one count each of possession of child pornography and distributing images of a child in the nude.

A judge set bail at $15,000 cash. If Urbaniak is released, he must follow conditions including GPS monitoring, surrendering his passport, and avoiding children and the internet.

His lawyer, Jeffrey Denner, had asked for $3,500 bail and said Urbaniak has “a long history of doing good.”

Police said Urbaniak, the pastor of Our Lady of Czestochowa in South Boston, was arrested Tuesday after a two-month investigation of peer-to-peer child pornography sharing networks found files linked to the rectory computer.

Prosecutors said state police determined that the computer appeared to be sharing and downloading child pornography. There is no evidence the girls in the images, who appear to be between the ages of 8 and 10, are from the area, and no alleged victims have come forward, authorities said.

The archdiocese said Urbaniak has been placed on administrative leave and barred from functioning as a priest during the investigation. The archdiocese has also informed the head of his order in Poland, the Order of Friars Minor Conventual.

“The archdiocese is fully cooperating with law enforcement,” the statement said. “The church prays for all those impacted by these events and is committed to providing for the pastoral care of the parish during this difficult time.”

Urbaniak was ordained in Lodz, Poland, in 1998, and has been in the Boston Archdiocese since 2008. He also served a year as temporary administrator of St. Adalbert church in Boston’s Hyde Park section.

His lawyer said Urbaniak has been in the U.S. for 12 years and is a naturalized U.S. citizen.
