Social to benefit one-room school

A box-lunch social by invitation on the grounds of the Brewster mansion, 8 Brewster Place, Buxton, at noon on Saturday, July 28, will benefit the maintenance fund for the restored N.C. Watson one-room school.

When the school opened in the early 1900s, the teacher, a Miss Partridge, organized a social to auction box lunches as a fundraiser to buy school supplies.

This year, like a century ago, women will provide decorated boxes for two and men will take cash to buy the boxes. Bruce Buxton will be the auctioneer and a jazz group, Kind of Blue, will entertain.

Period attire – ladies wearing hats and gentlemen suspenders – is optional.

The Buxton-Hollis Historical Society sponsors the social. Two-hundred invitations have been sent and those receiving them are reminded to RSVP Beverly Atkinson at 929-6495. “You will make new friends and we will support the repairs for our N.C. Watson School,” a printed card included with invitations read.
