PITTSBURGH – Pedro Alvarez hit his 20th homer of the season, Andrew McCutchen had two hits to boost his batting average to a major-league best .372 and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Friday night.

Kevin Correia (7-6) overcame a shaky start to win his fifth consecutive decision. Joel Hanrahan worked out of a two-on, one-out jam for his 27th save.

Neil Walker led off the fifth with a go-ahead homer off Ricky Nolasco (8-8) to help the Pirates rally for their 27th come-from-behind victory, second-most in baseball.

BRAVES 11, NATIONALS 10: Paul Janish hit a run-scoring bloop single in the 11th inning to complete the Atlanta Braves’ wild comeback win at Washington.

The Nationals led 9-0 after five innings but Atlanta scored four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings and took a 10-9 lead in the top of the ninth on Michael Bourn’s two-run triple.

Craig Kimbrel blew his second save in 30 chances in the bottom of the ninth when Danny Espinosa hit a solo homer into the visitors’ bullpen in left-center field to tie the game at 10.

REDS 3, BREWERS 1: Homer Bailey pitched eight innings and Zack Cozart hit the first of Cincinnati’s three solo homers as the Reds beat visiting Milwaukee.

Bailey has won four straight starts for the first time in his career. Cozart, Jay Bruce and Scott Rolen homered off Marco Estrada.

DODGERS 7, METS 6: Matt Kemp homered early as Los Angeles hammered a struggling Johan Santana, then held off the host New York Mets.

Luis Cruz connected for his first major league home run, a two-run shot, and the Dodgers finally solved Santana (6-7), who entered 5-0 with a 0.50 ERA in five career starts against them.

CARDINALS 4, CUBS 1: Kyle Lohse worked seven strong innings and St. Louis ended Ryan Dempster’s 33-inning scoreless streak with a three-run first against visiting Chicago.

Matt Holliday added a home run estimated at 469 feet, the longest at 7-year-old Busch Stadium, in the third inning.

Dempster hadn’t allowed a run since May 30 while winning five consecutive starts and entered with a major league-best 1.86 ERA.

GIANTS 7, PHILLIES 2: Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, and Tim Lincecum threw seven sharp innings as NL West-leading San Francisco won at Philadelphia.

Ryan Howard hit a solo homer for the last-place Phillies, who have lost two in a row after winning four straight.

Lincecum (4-10) allowed two runs and five hits, striking out six.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ORIOLES 10, INDIANS 2: Jim Thome hit his 610th career homer to move into seventh place on the career list as Baltimore routed host Cleveland.

Thome passed Sammy Sosa on the career list with a towering 418-foot shot off Derek Lowe (8-8) to open the fourth inning.

Portland’s Ryan Flaherty had a three-run homer and Mark Reynolds doubled home two runs in a six-run third for Baltimore.

TIGERS 4, WHITE SOX 2: Justin Verlander shut down the White Sox after the third inning, and the Tigers backed their ace with timely hitting in a win at Detroit.

Verlander (11-5) allowed four hits in eight innings, including a two-run homer in the third by Alejandro De Aza.

Jake Peavy (7-7) struck out the first five batters he faced and seven overall, but Detroit scored three runs in the third.
