GRAY – The Gray-New Gloucester Senior Softball team recently won the state championships and is headed for the eastern regional tournament in Worcester, Mass., starting July 28.
The following is a list of the players, with comments from the coaching staff.
Breanna Bozzuto: Simply the best person on the team. She will do anything that is asked of her without hesitation. She is deceivingly fast on the base paths and is by far the most improved player these past few years. She plays A.S.A. softball and also runs track at GNG.
Heather Chapman: Works at Frozen Custard, volunteers eight hours a week at Maine Medical Center, won the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership award at McAuley High School, where she was captain of the JV basketball team. Most versatile player on the softball field, she can pitch, catch, play infield or outfield.
Erin Doughty: The quietest girl on the team. This will be her third year at the regionals and she is the most dedicated player we have. Plays first base and outfield and has a powerful swing at the plate. She always gives 110 percent, never complains and will do anything to help out in any way possible.
Maddie Elliott: This year’s surprise player. Hits home runs, plays every position very well, runs the bases with ease and gloves every ball hit in her direction. Also plays A.S.A. ball and attends Windham High School.
Emily Harlow: She owns the catching position on the team. Great catcher and base runner, even better attitude in the dugout. Keeps everyone loose. She works full time between Chipman Farm stand and McDonalds.
Emily Hotham: Funny, smart, athletic, a great young lady. Plays second, shortstop and the outfield. Also runs the bases as good as anyone. She played on the varsity soccer team as a freshman and plays JV basketball at GNGHS.
Anna Knapp: She plays third base and hits the ball as hard as anyone. We used to joke that she swings a “tree” because she is so strong at the plate. The faster the pitches come in, the further she hits the ball. She also plays on the varsity soccer team at GNG.
Sam Libby: One of the hardest workers on the team. Anyone who has gone by the fairgrounds in New Gloucester has seen her practicing. One of the better hitters on the team and is amazing on the base paths. In the pitching circle she is one of the best in the state when she’s on, bar none. Plays for McAuley High School and the Frozen Ropes A.S.A. softball team.
Abby Ordway: One of the nicest young ladies you will ever meet. Plays A.S.A. softball, works full time at Gray Rec, amazingly good at all positions in the infield. Jokester in the dugout but gets it done on the field, she’s a player that every team wants on their side.
Sandy Ricardi: Best pure athlete in southern Maine. Coaches gymnastics in Lewiston, fierce competitor, great softball player. Owns first base (has college potential at that position) and is lethal at bat and on the base paths. Headed to Texas in the fall for a trimester of studies in her final year of high school.
Alex Thompson: She recently attended Girls State at Husson College, works at Thompson’s Apple Orchard, was named to the Class B all star team this past spring. A team leader on the field who would go through a fence to catch a ball. Loves competition and rises to a challenge. Plays A.S.A. softball as well.
Katelyn Tucker: She has been a softball phenom she was 9 years old. Works on her game year-round by traveling to Massachusetts on a weekly basis to maintain her edge. Great hitter, fielder and batter. Also an all-star field hockey player at Windham High School. Plays A.S.A. ball for the Maine Attraction.
Maria Valente: Not just a local legend, but the real deal. Started varsity as a freshman in soccer, basketball and softball at GNGHS. Just competed at the AAU national basketball tournament in Florida. Plays third base, pitches and catches. Infectious smile, but will go through people to get an out.
Taylor Whaley: This will be Taylor’s fourth trip to a regional tournament, and she will be the leader in the circle. She simply attacks batters at the plate and is a joy to watch. At bat she is fierce. She led McAuley this spring hitting over .400 and named to the SMAA honorable mention all star team. She plays A.S.A. softball for Frozen Ropes and works year-round on her game. Also participates in cross country and basketball.
