BRUNSWICK — Local, a country store for urban foodies, is opening Friday in Brunswick.
Located at 148 Maine St., Local is a new space filled with goods, food and drink for people who love to shop, cook and eat, according to a news release.
Put together by Sylvia Wyler and Sharon Smiley, their simple philosophy is to feature the best that is local while offering other choices of familiar, high-quality brands. Coffee at the store is small-batch roasted by Green Tree in Lincolnville, but it also carries Stumptown. Need a choco-fix? There is Haven’s of Maine and Dan’s variety truffles from Vermont, among others.
Every day, Local provides fresh bread and pastries, like crusty baguettes and flaky croissants from Portland’s Standard Baking and sourdough from Rosemount Market. Local produce comes from Farm Fresh, Crown of Maine, and flowers and herbs from Little River Farm.
Tired of driving to Portland for fancy deli goods? The cases at Local are packed with a variety of cheeses from around Maine and New England, and from France and Spain. The store offers domestic pancetta, and Italian prosciutto cut to order, olives and olive oils, pâtés and terrines. There’s a small but thoughtful wine selection in the back, with Maine beer, cider, and, of course, Maine Root and Bee sodas.
A back corner of the store has a collection of prepared Maine foods that include Northwoods Gourmet Girl Ketchup and Pickle Relish from Greenville, Pemberton’s Pasta Sauces from Saco, Olivia’s Garden Pesto, Deer Camp BBQ and hot sauces from Waterville, Schlotterbeck and Foss sauces, Bar Harbor chowders, bisques, and tinned herring and sardines, Raye’s mustards, and lots more.
From other parts of New England come Crooked Birch salsas, Quinn’s Microwaveable Popcorn (parmesan and rosemary), Real Pickles, and American Fruit & Nut Company’s flavored nuts, just to name a few.
Local also features neat stuff for any kitchen and any budget, including Weck lidded jars and carafes, cheeseboards from Brooklyn Slate, Vic Firth salt and pepper grinders, Veggie Dude’s Scrub Brushes, and Stem Gem strawberry stemmers.
In the kitchen, Maya Wyler crafts a daily slate of Grab ‘n Go salads, sides, and entrées for every taste. Soups, sandwiches and desserts are also available.
Friday’s opening will feature lots of tasting of featured products. Michael Sanders will sign copies of his new cookbooks, “Fresh From Maine” and “Drinking In Maine: 50 Cocktails From Our Best Chefs and Artisanal Producers.”
Local is open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
