FREEPORT

Following a six-year tenure, Sande Updegraph, executive director of the Freeport Economic Development Corp., plans to move on this fall.

The organization is currently looking for candidates to replace Updegraph after her departure in November.

While she will leave the organization focused on supporting businesses in Freeport, Updegraph said the move is not a departure from the business world.

She hopes to continue serving as a business mentor and said she’s currently working out a plan for what she described as a small online retail business.

Updegraph said she chose to stay on at the FEDC through the fall so she could see the extension of the Downeaster passenger rail service to Freeport and Brunswick, which is expected in early November.

“I do want to see the train arrive and am anxious for that,” Updegraph said.

She’s also proud of her organization’s work on the Hunter Road fields project, which the town continues to pursue, and facilitating the creation of the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce, for which she serves on the events committee.

Personally, Updegraph said, the move also might give her more time for involvement in other municipal positions. A Brunswick resident, she currently serves on the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals and is also a member of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA) board.

With experience in land-use planning and development from her time at the FEDC, Updegraph said she is considering an application to serve on the Brunswick Planning Board.

For the next director, Updegraph said that the FEDC’s second set of development goals, a plan titled “Vision 2025,” will help to provide guidance as to the town’s economic development priorities.

According to an FEDC press release, applications for the position should be sent to Michael Wing at mwing2@maine.rr.com by Wednesday.
