A Phippsburg teenager who jumped from the Sagadahoc Bridge on Monday morning is listed in satisfactory condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Just before 8 a.m. Monday, witnesses reported seeing the male juvenile disappear over the edge of the bridge near Commercial Street in Bath. Other witnesses called Bath police to say the teen had landed on Commercial Street near the pumping station, Bath Police Chief Mike Field said Monday afternoon.

Officers rushed to the scene in response to reports that someone had jumped from the bridge, Bath Police Sgt. Robert Savary said Monday morning.

The teen was taken by Bath rescue workers to Maine Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, Field said.

Field drove the boy’s mother to Maine Medial Center, where he was listed in satisfactory condition this morning.

Savary said the teen plunged from a section of the bridge that is approximately 50 feet above the ground.

“It was totally unexpected, from the pieces we’ve put together so far,” Field said, adding that while police will continue to investigate the incident, “Obviously, our concern is for the boy and getting him the help he needs.”
