WESTBROOK – The U.S. Marshal’s Service in New York State arrested a Massachusetts man Wednesday who is wanted on murder charges connected to a 2011 stabbing in Westbrook.
Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety, said marshals arrested Tareek Hendricks, 31, formerly of Worcester, Mass., in Syracuse, N.Y., Wednesday morning. McCausland said Hendricks, who goes by the street name “B. K.,” reportedly offered no resistance.
McCausland said as of Wednesday afternoon, state police were in the process of bringing Hendricks back to Maine to face charges.
Police said Hendricks stabbed Robert Stubbs, 40, at his 73 Central St. home on April 21, 2011, at around 10:30 p.m. Stubbs died of multiple stab wounds, and his wife, Melissa Stubbs, 27, was wounded in the attack.
The day after the incident, neighbors said they heard what sounded like an argument and struggle prior to the stabbing.
“It sounded like 20 people were coming down the stairs,” said Johnny Price, 47, who lived next door to Stubbs in the two-story duplex.
After that, Price said, he heard an argument going on at the front door, then silence.
Allen Hicks, who lived in a second-floor apartment at 78 Central St., nearly across from 73 Central St., said he and his fiance?e heard and saw the argument out their front window.
“When we saw it, he was already on the porch, trying to get back in,” said Hicks the day after the crime, referring to a man he saw yelling. Hicks said the man looked like he was trying to force his way in, shouting, “Gimme my (stuff).”
Eventually, Hicks said, the man left, crossing the street to a vehicle waiting for him.
Police said the argument may have been drug-related, and that Hendricks and Stubbs knew each other and spent “significant” time together the day of the attack.
A suspect has been identified in the fatal stabbing Thursday night in Westbrook, and police have released a photo, above, of the suspect that they say was on a cell phone left at the scene of the stabbing. Police said the suspect, who they said goes by the street name “BK,” is about 5-foot-8-inches tall and 200 pounds. He has the word “LIFE” tattooed on his left fingers. Police believe he was driven from the scene and dropped off along Washington Ave. in Portland. (UPDATE: The suspect was apprehended Wednesday, July 11, 2012, in Syracuse, N.Y.)
