PORTLAND – Nomination papers are available for city elections to be held Nov. 6, including elections for three City Council seats and three school board seats.
It appears that seats in District 1, representing the East End, have drawn the most interest since papers became available July 2.
City Councilor Kevin Donoghue of Beckett Street and former City Councilor William Gorham of Eastern Promenade have taken out nomination papers for District 1. Donoghue defeated Gorham in 2006.
Incumbent Jenna Vendil of Vesper Street and Thomas Kelley of Morning Street have taken out papers for the District 1 school board seat.
City Councilor David Marshall of Pine Street has taken out papers for District 2, in the West End, and Wellington “Wells” Lyons of Danforth Street has taken out papers for the at-large council seat now held by Nicholas Mavodones Jr., who hadn’t taken out papers as of Monday.
Incumbent Sarah Thompson of Starbird Road has taken out papers for the at-large school board seat, while Holly Seeliger of Brackett Street has taken out papers for the District 2 seat.
Incumbent Gary Libby of Forest Avenue and Nisha Swinton of Pleasant Street have taken out papers for a seat on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees. And Cheryl Miner of Central Avenue has taken out papers for one of two seats on the Peaks Island Council.
Candidates need at least 75 signatures to appear on the ballot in a City Council or school board district race, while at least 300 signatures are needed to qualify for an at-large race, said City Election Administrator Bud Philbrick.
Water district candidates must get 100 signatures, while only 50 signatures are needed for the Peaks Island Council.
Nomination papers, which are available in the city clerk’s office at City Hall, must be filed in the period from Aug. 13 and to Aug. 27.
