PORTLAND — Nomination papers for the Nov. 6 elections are available for local races, including three City Council seats and three School Board seats.
It appears District 1 seats, representing the East End, are drawing interest since papers became available on July 2.
City Councilor Kevin Donoghue of Beckett Street and former City Councilor William Gorham of Eastern Promenade have taken out nomination papers for District 1. Donoghue defeated Gorham in 2006.
Incumbent Jenna Vendil of Vesper Street and Thomas Kelley of Morning Street have taken out papers for the District 1 School Board seat.
City Councilor David Marshall has taken out papers for District 2 in the West End, and Danforth Street resident Wellington “Wells” Lyons has taken out papers for the at-large council seat currently held by Nicholas Mavodones Jr., who hadn’t taken out papers as of today.
Incumbent Sarah Thompson of Starbird Road has taken out papers for the At-Large School Board seat, while Holly Seeliger of Brackett Street has taken out papers for the District 2 seat.
Incumbent Gary Libby of Forest Avenue and Nisha Swinton of Pleasant Street have taken out papers to be a trustee for the Portland Water District. And Cheryl Miner of Central Avenue has taken out papers for one of two seats on the Peaks Island Council.
At least 75 signatures are required to appear on the ballot for a City Council and School Board district race, while at least 300 signatures are needed to qualify for an at-large race, according to City Election Administrator Bud Philbrick.
Water district candidates must get 100 signatures, while only 50 signatures are needed for the Peaks Island race.
Nomination papers, which are available in the city clerk’s office at Portland City Hall, must be turned in between Aug. 13 and 27.
