AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine House of Representatives district in Augusta that was left without a candidate from either party in the days after the June 12 primaries will soon get replacement candidates.
District 57 was left without candidates when both primary winners — Republican Andrew Worcester and Democratic incumbent Maeghan Maloney — withdrew their names.
The Augusta Republicans will hold a caucus next Monday, July 9, to choose a replacement for Worcester. Their caucus was delayed a week because of an election paperwork delay.
Meanwhile, two Republicans — state Rep. Patrick Flood of Winthrop and Lew Wheaton of West Gardiner — have announced interest in replacing Sen. Earle McCormick in the race for McCormick’s Senate seat. McCormick, a Republican, also withdrew his candidacy.
The winner will face Democrat David Bustin of Hallowell.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
