WESTBROOK – Anyone looking for a furry friend should head to the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook this Friday, as the organization is holding a one-day-only special adoption event.
According to Lynne McGhee, community relations manager, the shelter will waive its normal fees and offer animals for adoption at reduced costs. She said dogs could be adopted at half the normal price, which varies depending on the age and breed. Cats over a year old will be free and two kittens can be adopted for the price of one. Additionally, McGhee said, animals such as rabbits, ferrets, mice and gerbils could also be adopted for free on Friday.
McGhee said that the Animal Refuge League is holding the event because it had 50 cats come in on one day about two weeks ago, and must find homes for the animals before the shelter became overfull.
“We’re not full, but we’re trying to be proactive,” she said.
She said that the shelter decided to cut its fees to make it easier for people wh have been considering adopting a pet to do so.
“Our main concern is that all these animals get a great new home,” she said.
Anyone looking to adopt an animal can visit the shelter at 449 Stroudwater St. in Westbrook between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday.
