Four former Navy houses at Mitchell Field will soon be out of the town’s hands after the Board of Selectmen approved demolition and removal bids earlier this month.

With bidding opened on each building separately, three contractors will now undertake either removal or demolition of the buildings, with only one building bringing a cost to the town.

By a vote of 2-0, with Selectwoman Alison Hawkes abstaining, the Board of Selectmen approved agreements with three contractors, two of whom will pay the town small amounts to remove the buildings, comprising two houses with unattached garages.

In its approval of a contract with Eric Field — who made a plea to the Board of Selectmen in March for the chance to assess the possibility of moving the building called “House 163” — the town will receive $100 for the building.

For the two unattached garages, the town will receive $1 from Ronald Chipman and for the other house — called “House 162” — the town will pay Ray Labbe & Sons $10,612.

The agreement will transfer the properties from the town to the respective contractors, freeing the town of what Town Administrator Kristi Eiane described as a liability for the town.

“The ultimate objective is to get them off of the site,” Eiane told The Times Record in April.

Per the contract agreement, Field and Chipman must complete their work to remove the buildings by Oct. 1 and the demolition work on House 162 must be completed before Aug. 1.

The town received bids for eight parties on the project, including from: Country Fare Inc., Mitchell Construction, Koncrete Creations, Camcorp Excavation and RA Webber.

The Board of Selectmen will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday to consider a number of other contracts, including one for property management at the West Harpswell School and for the removal of gangways leading from a mooring dolphin at the Mitchell Field pier.
