Billed as a pitcher’s duel, the first four innings of the game did not disappoint. Trenton lefty Vidal Nuno tossed the first four frames in scoreless fashion, as did Portland southpaw Drake Britton.
Trenton entered the bottom of the fifth having notched just a single and a walk against Britton, but the offense came together for a run on two hits for a 1-0 lead. With one out, Jose Gil singled and Addison Maruszak doubled him home.
Trenton exploded for five runs over the next two frames. Luke Murton ripped a two-run home run. An error on shortstop Derrik Gibson scored two more runs, and a pair of sacrifice flyballs made it a 7-0 game.
The Sea Dogs got on the board in ninth on a home run by Bryce Brentz. Portland managed just four hits.
Portland is slated to open a four-game in three-day series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats tonight at 7 p.m. at Hadlock Field.
