BROWNVILLE — The northern Maine town of Brownville declared a state of emergency following devastating flash floods, even as more rain was forecast for the region.

The Board of Selectmen declared an emergency Monday and planned to press for a state declaration from the Gov. Paul LePage, who’s visiting on Tuesday.

Town Manager Matthew Pineo told the Bangor Daily News that previous flooding caused damage of $200,000. And officials feared additional rain could do more damage to a rail line through Brownville that’s essential to northern Maine’s economy.

A flood warning was already posted Monday evening from Dover-Foxcroft to an area southwest of Millinocket. Ken Wallingford from the National Weather Service in Caribou said additional rain through Wednesday could cause more flooding across the region.
