AUGUSTA – Julia Geaumont was determined not to get awed by the lofty statistics she put up for the Thornton Academy softball team this spring.

The 14-2 record with a 0.84 ERA? The .679 average with 10 home runs and 35 RBI?

“I tried not to get caught up in them,” she said. “But it’s cool now to put it in perspective what I did do this year.”

Geaumont capped her stellar senior season with the Miss Maine Softball award, which she received Thursday night in between the C/D and A/B senior all-star games at Cony Family Field.

“It means a lot of hard work paid off,” she said. “I was up against the best competition. They were all deserving.”

The Miss Maine Softball award is given to the top senior in the state as voted by the Maine High School Softball Coaches Association.

The other finalists were Scarborough pitcher/short-stop Mo Hannan, Kennebunk catcher Janelle Bouchard and Bucksport catcher Mindy Pye.

“This year I wanted to go out hard,” said Geaumont, who will attend Bowdoin in the fall. “I wanted to go out with a bang.”

Geaumont, also the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram player of the year, struck out 136 batters in 16 regular-season games. She led Thornton (15-3) to the Western Class A semifinals.

The award also takes career statistics into consideration, and Geaumont certainly shined in her four seasons with the Trojans. She went 47-10 with a 1.54 ERA and 447 strikeouts. She was a career .514 hitter with 19 home runs and 96 RBI.

Scarborough Coach Tom Griffin, who helped coach the West A/B all-stars, hailed Geaumont as a “true competitor.”

“It hasn’t come easy for her,” said Griffin, whose team handed Geaumont her only two defeats during the regular season. “She never beat us, but you always knew you’d be in for a battle with her.”

Geaumont and Hannan pitched for both Class A/B all-star squads because the East didn’t have any pitchers.

The West won, 5-2.

Massabesic shortstop Emily Schatz had a two-run single and Gray-New Gloucester’s Maggie Chaplin added an RBI single for the West.

In the C/D game, Richmond’s Leandra Martin pitched all nine innings and drove in the winning run in the ninth, giving the West a 6-5 victory.
