BRUNSWICK
Brunswick firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze apparently started by construction inside the wall of a house at 47 Harpswell Road on Wednesday morning.
Fire Chief Ken Brillant said contractors working on the older two-story structure were using a heat gun to remove old paint which apparently caused a smoldering fire inside the wall. The contractors took a short coffee break and when they returned, they noticed smoke and used a garden hose to dump water in the area.
They notified the fire department, which received the call at 9:27 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to dig out the charred boards and pull off some additional boards to make sure the fire didn’t spread — all on the exterior of the building.
The fire blew light smoke in the building, which firefighters ventilated. Brillant confirmed that the blaze did not cause much damage, given that the contractors are replacing siding and helped pull down some of the boards beneath the siding which they will be able to re-attach.
Approximately 13 firefighters responded to the call, and no one was injured, according to Brillant, who said one firefighter fell off scaffolding but is fine.
Although firefighters laid down some hoses, they never had to run any water through them and just used a watering can, Brillant said.
