PORTLAND (AP) — A junior member of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ staff has been fired for sending a tweet about independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
A spokesman for the Maine Republican says Luke Welch, employed as new media and press assistant, was dismissed Wednesday.
The tweet came from Collins’ official account as senators debated a farm bill. It read: “Good ol’ (at)Sen- Sanders is always entertaining. Not a huge fan. I’ll give him this, the genetically modified food label makes sense.”
The Collins spokesman tells the Portland Press Herald that Welch had access to Collins’ account and “accidentally tweeted something that the senator would never say and which does not reflect her views.”
Welch, from his personal Twitter account, said the tweet was “posted in error.”
