
The Sea Dogs exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning, and Chris Hernandez tossed seven shutout innings leading the Sea Dogs in the opener of a three-game series.
Hernandez (4-6) fired seven shutout innings, holding the Senators to five hits. He walked two and struck out three. He lowered his teamleading earned-run average to 2.64, tossing 91 pitches, 58 for strikes.
Ryan Dent (3-for-5, two runs, two RBIs) got the night started with a two-run single in the second inning to give the Sea Dogs a quick 2-0 lead.
The first 10 batters in the fourth inning reached base safely, with the first nine each scoring as the Sea Dogs sent 14 men to the plate for an 11-0 lead. Derrick Gibson drove in two runs with a single, and Oscar Tejeda ripped a grand slam. Juan Carlos Linares tripled, while Bryce Brentz doubled to highlight the big inning.
Jeremy Hazelbaker was 2- for-4 for Portland with a home run, a two-run shot.
Chorye Spoone and Chris Balcom-Miller each tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Hernandez.
The two teams will play game two of the series tonight at 7 p.m. Lefty Drake Britton (1- 0, 1.10) will get the start for the Sea Dogs. The Senators will send righty Kevin Pucetas (4-2, 1.63) to the mound.
