PORTLAND (AP) — The public is getting a chance to voice its opinion on proposed toll hikes on the Maine Turnpike.

The Turnpike Authority has scheduled three public hearings this week, Tuesday in Auburn; Wednesday in Portland; and Thursday in Saco.

The authority says toll hikes are needed to cover the yearly operating budget, short-term maintenance and long-term debt service.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the option favored by turnpike officials would add $1 to the toll plaza in York and lower amounts at other places. E-ZPass users would see increases of 20 percent, from 6.7 cents to 8 cents per mile.

Other options would lower or raise tolls in different locations.

The authority’s board of trustees could make a decision next month. Toll increases likely would take effect by November.
