NORTH YARMOUTH — Stephen Gorden won a second term on the Yarmouth Water District Board of Trustees Tuesday, defeating Guy Watson 336-229 according to unofficial results.
It was the second time the two North Yarmouth residents squared off at the polls. Watson, who was elected in 2006, lost his re-election bid to Gorden in 2009.
“I very much appreciate the voters having supported my programs that I have put forth,” Gorden said Tuesday night.
The water district serves 3,000 customers in Yarmouth and North Yarmouth.
Uncontested races
Incumbent Paul Napolitano ran unopposed for a third, three-year term on the Board of Selectmen, and received 554 votes. The Mill Ridge Road resident resigned as chairman April 3 after the board rejected his attempt to meet in executive session about a survey that sought reaction to the proposed closing of North Yarmouth Memorial School. He believed the survey should have been authorized by the board before it was published, and wanted to discuss the matter in private.
Mark Girard of Timber Lane was unopposed to complete the final two years of Selectman Andrew Walsh’s term, and received 589 votes. Walsh announced his resignation from the board last month.
Incumbent Clark Baston of Sweetser Road ran unopposed for his seat on the Cemetery Commission, receiving 680 votes. He was first elected in 1996.
Only one candidate, Jeffrey Shorey of Toddy Brook Lane, submitted nomination papers for the three, three-year seats on the Budget Committee. He was appointed to the committee in 2011 and received 601 votes Tuesday. Tim Lambert and Melissa Mullison received five write-in votes.
The new Charter Commission had six two-year seats available, but only three candidates: Richard Brobst and Clark Whittier, both of Walnut Hill Road, and Audrey Lones of Baston Road. They received 414, 475 and 443 votes, respectively. Linc Merrill earned eight write-in votes, while Ray Giandrea and Al Ahlers received six and four, respectively.
The boards that do not have enough candidates will require votes for write-in candidates. If there still aren’t enough candidates, the Board of Selectmen can appoint members to the Budget Committee and Charter Commission.
