NEW YORK – David Price struck out eight over five scrappy innings to become the AL leader in wins and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 7-3 on Thursday night to avert a three-game series sweep.
Price (8-3) finished his night by retiring two of the Yankees’ most dangerous hitters with the bases loaded. Alex Rodriguez struck out after an 11-pitch at-bat and Robinson Cano grounded out in six more, ending New York’s best threat to cut into a four-run lead.
C.C. Sabathia (7-3) struck out 12 and matched a season high with 121 pitches for the Yankees, who lost for the fourth time in their last 14 and went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position to lower their average in such situations to .218.
TIGERS 7, INDIANS 5: Miguel Cabrera homered and Casey Crosby earned his first major league win for the host Tigers.
ATHLETICS 7, RANGERS 1: Coco Crisp hit a solo homer and bases-loaded triple to match his season total for extra-base hits and lead Oakland to a home win.
WHITE SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 3: Orlando Hudson singled home Dayan Viciedo in the bottom of the ninth for the host White Sox.

DODGERS 8, PHILLIES 3: Los Angeles overcame a two-run, sixth-inning deficit to complete its first four-game sweep at Philadelphia in 66 years.
METS 3, NATIONALS 3: R.A. Dickey kept host Washington swinging at shadows as the Mets avoided a road sweep. Dickey tossed four-hit ball for a scoreless 71/3 innings.
BREWERS 4, CUBS 3: In Milwaukee, Norichika Aoki homered twice, including off Casey Coleman to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning.
GIANTS 8, PADRES 3: Matt Cain struck out nine in seven innings to win his sixth straight start as the Giants won in San Diego.
PIRATES 5, REDS 4: Michael McKenry hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to rally Pittsburgh to a road win.
BRAVES 8, MARLINS 2: Jason Heyward hit two solo homers to center and the Braves completed a three-game sweep in Miami.
NOTES
NATIONALS: Washington pitcher Josh Wilkie has been suspended for 50 games for a second violation for a drug of abuse under baseball’s minor league drug program. A 27-year-old right-hander, Wilkie is 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 18 relief appearances this year at Triple-A Syracuse of the International League.
DODGERS: Former manager Tommy Lasorda was released from a New York hospital, three days after suffering a mild heart attack.
YANKEES: Joba Chamberlain tweeted that he is set to throw pitches off a mound today as he recovers from a dislocated ankle.
• The Yankees placed right-handed reliever Freddy Garcia on the bereavement list because of the death of his grandfather and recalled reliever Ryota Igarashi from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
LEAGUE: Two people involved in an agreement between the players and MLB said there will be no written decision in the case overturning Ryan Braun’s drug suspension.
NATIONALS: Washington reshuffled its bullpen, reinstating right-hander Brad Lidge from the disabled list and putting right-hander Henry Rodriguez on the DL.
