The Mt. Ararat and Brunswick high school girls lacrosse teams advanced in Eastern Maine Class A play, while the Morse boys saw its season end with a 9-4 loss to Gardiner in Eastern Maine Class B action on Wednesday.

The third time was a charm for the fifth-seeded Eagles, who got a goal from Carly Raymond at 2:10 of the first overtime to beat the No. 4 Rams (9-4). Cony had beaten Mt. Ararat 11-4 and 10-9 during the regular season.

In a tightly-contested game throughout, the Rams got a goal from Bayleigh Logan with 20 seconds left in the first half to put the hosts up 5- 3.

Rebecca Schuman scored off a Raymond feed with 2:31 gone in the first half for a 1-1 tie, and Hayley Michaud scored on a breakaway with 11:58 left for a 2-2 standoff.

Cony goaltender Katrina Duncan made a nice save of a Michaud blast and Cony’s Chelsea Begin scored unassisted with 7:15 left for a 3-2 game. Mt. Ararat’s Hannah Hauser knifed through several defenders for a third tie at 3-3 with 4:12 left, but Heather Leet scored with 1:58 left for a 4-3 Cony advantage.

 
 
Hauser scored four goals in the second half to finish with five, while Schuman had three and Michaud two.

Cony got goals from Mia Diplock (5), Begin (2), Leet, Josie Lee and Logan each with one.

Mt. Ararat goaltender Bailey Sullivan made seven saves, Katrina Duncan had 10 for Cony.

In another Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinal, topseeded Brunswick improved to 12-1, while the No. 8 Vikings closed out at 8-5.

The Dragons will take on Mt. Ararat Saturday (11 a.m.) in semifinal play.

Brunswick goaltender Molly Herman allowed three goals, with one caused turnover and nine saves, while EmaLeigh Aschbrenner gave up three scores with two saves.

Brunswick led 11-3 at the half.

“We had seven different goal-scorers, which is nice to see,” said Brunswick coach Beth Caputi.

Suzannah Smith led with five goals, two assists and three draw controls, while Dakota Foster had four goals, two assists and seven draw controls, Corinne O’Connor two goals and three assists, Annie Kelly three goals, Caroline Wild three assists, Jen Machin a goal and two assists and Courtney Roderick and Lillian Kjellman a goal each.

“It will be exciting to play against Mt. Ararat as there is always great energy from both teams for that game,” added Caputi.

MORSE BOYS 4
GARDINER 9

In a defensive outing, No. 2 Gardiner (12-1) extended a 3-1 first-half lead to hold off the No. 7 Shipbuilders, who closed out at 6-7.

Neither team got on the board until Gardiner’s Justin Lovely scored with two minutes left in the first half.

Keegan Smith scored two of his three goals in the first half to boost the hosts. In the third period, Smith and Dalton Sargent scored to give the Tigers a 5-1 advantage.

Kennebec Valley Conference Player of the Year Alexander Paulus led Morse with three goals and Zach Hersey had one, while goaltender Alex Small came away with 17 saves on 28 shots. Aaron Nadeau chipped in with an assist.

Graduation takes Morse seniors Small, Hersey, Kai Whitehead, Schuyler Mace, Neal Crowley, Max Rawson, Lyle Douglass, Ethan Mattice, Codi Fitzgerald, Max Unkenholz and Alex Crosby.
