SCARBOROUGH — A dead whale has washed ashore on one of southern Maine’s most popular swimming beaches.

The Scarborough Police Department said it received several reports on Sunday of a dead whale that washed up on Pine Point Beach. The whale is located on the beach at the end of Oak Street.

Pine Point Beach is located in Scarborough, a few miles north of Old Orchard Beach.

A phone call placed to Marine Mammals of Maine, a non-profit volunteer organization that responds to strandings and reports of dead animals on southern Maine beaches, was not returned Sunday night.

Last month, a dead Minke whale washed up onto rocks near Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth. It is not known what type of whale came ashore at Pine Point Beach.
