While the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds won’t soar into Brunswick for couple of months, hundreds of smaller planes — along with hot air balloons and helicopters — are expected to fill the air this weekend during the second annual Brunswick International Fly-In at Brunswick Landing.

Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station, the free event drew more than 300 planes last year, along with throngs of avid aviation enthusiasts eager to admire all things airborne.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, aircraft will begin landing at the Brunswick Executive Airport.

Other events throughout the weekend include scenic rides in tethered hot air balloons, biplanes and heli- copters, antique and home-built planes, a business aviation expo, professional seminars, aircraft on display, safety seminars and evening entertainment such as a screening of the film “Always” beginning at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Trophies in an aircraft competition will be awarded for best home built, kit; best home built, plans; best experimental, light support; best antique 50 or more years; furthest participant; and five judges choice awards will be handed out.

Kim Powers, who manages operations at the Wiscasset Municipal Airport, said the fly-in keeps things busy farther up the coast as well.

“There will be a lot of activity here because of (the fly-in),” Powers said, including planes stopping to refuel at the 3,400-foot airstrip in Wiscasset.
