BRUNSWICK — On Saturday the Frontier Cafe (14 Maine St.) will host an evening of Americana roots music from two duos — Red Tail Ring from Kalamazoo, Mich., and Putnam Smith with April Reed-Cox from Portland. The evening’s music will range from original compositions to interpretations of old ballads and dance tunes from Appalachia.

Music begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

“Red Tail Ring has made haunting, close harmonies a centerpiece of their performances, which they support with a bed of intricate instrumentation on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, mandolin and guitar,” states a news release. Beauchamp and Premo have traveled increasingly farther in their musical ramblings, playing shows throughout the Midwest, East Coast and Southeastern United States.

“Putnam Smith is a rootsy multi-instrumentalist songwriter, writing and perfuming on guitar, mandolin, fretless banjo and piano,” continues the release. “Though steeped in old-time Appalachian traditions, he is very much a storyteller for the modern age.”

The release notes that Smith first came to national attention with his 2009 release, “Goldrush,” which went to No. 5 on the national Folk & Bluegrass DJ Charts (and made it on six “Favorite Albums of 2009” lists). Selected as an “Emerging Artist” at the 2011 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and noted as “One To Watch,” Putnam has begun to establish himself as a rising star not only here in Maine, but on the national folkscape as well. He will be accompanied by accomplished cellist, April Reed-Cox.”
