BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College seniors Jordan Edgett and Shelagh Merrill have been named All-American Athletes by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

In its 33rd year, the NSCA All-American Program recognizes and honors student/athletes’ dedication to strength training and conditioning.

A captain and infielder for the Bowdoin baseball team, Edgett finished his career with a .294 batting average, 72 runs scored, 38 extra-base hits and 57 runs batted in. He helped lead the Polar Bears to a runner-up finish in the NESCAC Tournament and the team’s second NCAA Tournament appearance and first tournament victory this spring.

“Jordan is driven to a greater degree than most regarding the connection between a commitment to our strength and conditioning program and enhanced performance on the baseball field,” said Bowdoin strength and conditioning coach Jim St. Pierre.

Merrill was a senior captain on the women’s ice hockey team and closed out her career with 28 goals and 32 assists in 100 career contests. She helped pace the Polar Bears to a 12-10-4 mark and NESCAC semifinal appearance last winter.

“Shelagh missed just one game in her career; a true testament to her preparation,” offered St. Pierre. “She approached the off-season with exceptional consistency. She hit the two gold standards in our strength program, demonstrating an ability to bench-press her body weight and squat 1.5 times her body weight. She has been a wonderful example for her teammates.”
