TOPSHAM — “Teens for Jeans,” a benefit concert for The Clothing Garage, is scheduled to run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at Mt. Ararat High School Commons.
The concert is for people age 20 and younger. ILLIJAH, Miles from Nothing and Trouble in the West will perform.
Admission costs $10 at the door. Those who donate new or gently used clothing will receive a $2 discount. Advance tickets are on sale at Brunswick High School, Brunswick Junior High School, Mt. Ararat High School and Mt. Ararat Middle School.
Meilin Brodeur, a Brunswick High School junior, and Emily Fox, a Mt. Ararat High School senior, collaborated to organize the benefit concert for The Clothing Garage, a grassroots nonprofit group that provides clothing to children and teens in need in the Mid-coast region.
The mission of The Clothing Garage is to provide gently used or new clothing to children who are in need. The clothing is available from donations. Clients are referred by Head Start teachers, Department of Health and Human Services caseworkers, local social service agencies and word of mouth.
Tammy Cutchen and Meghan Painton founded the agency in 2009. They are volunteers, have no paid staff and last year operated on a budget of $500, according to a release about the concert. In 2011 they provided clothing, school supplies, etc., to several hundred children.
The Clothing Garage operates several programs, including “Ready, Set, Go to Learn,” which provides school supplies and clothing at the beginning of the school year; “First Night Bags,” which provides a carrying bag with necessary items for children entering foster care and the general provision of clothing, as necessary.
Clothing for teens is particularly needed.
Last year Brodeur organized a clothing collection at Brunswick High School and All Saints Parish. This year, joined by Fox, she is holding another clothing drive, as well as a concert to benefit the Clothing Garage.
Peers Assisting and Listening to Students (PALS), an organization at Mt. Ararat to which Fox belongs, is the sponsor of the concert.
Clothing collection boxes are available at Mt. Ararat High School; Brunswick High School; St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church; Estilo, a consignment shop on Pleasant Street in Brunswick; and Indrani’s in the Tontine Mall.
