To the editor:
For the current budget problems in Brunswick, I would recommend that the Town Council cut our public works department.
I say “outsource” that yearround work to Crooker’s, Labbe’s or other construction firms that are based in and pay taxes here. This would keep their wheels rolling, for public works jobs are always best to professional businesses whose livelihoods depend on good work.
We then would not have to build another public works garage, could sell all available equipment and be done with a huge payroll.
Years ago, the town’s public works department picked up our garbage, but that got “outsourced.” Now it is mostly plowing and road repairs, for which Crooker and Labbe are experts.
Many towns in Maine contract out public works and emergency medical response. Why not Brunswick?
